Omushkego Wahkohtowin: A Path Forward

Omushkego Wahkohtowin conservation efforts stem from a Mushkegowuk Council resolution passed in 1989, calling to establish a Tribal Conservation Authority that would ensure protection of the land.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Mushkegowuk Council and the Government of Canada to assess the feasibility of a national marine conservation area (NMCA) was signed in 2021.

Over the next several years, Omushkego community members were interviewed, and numerous public meetings were held. That input from community members was then used to develop the draft Omushkego Wahkohtowin Conservation Plan.

This “Path Forward” is a summary of that plan.
