Celebrating National Indigenous History Month

“We, the Omushkego Ininew, have existed within the Omushkego Aski since the time of first light. It is the plan of the Creator of life that we will exist in these territories for all time. Everything that we need for a fruitful and successful life has been provided for us by the Creator of Life and all that has ever been asked of us is that we be respectful and thankful for the gifts granted to us by Creation.”

– Article 1 of the Constitution of the Omushkego Ininew

June is National Indigenous History Month.

It’s an opportunity to reflect on our roots and honour the strength of our Nations. It is vital that we recognize the generations of Omushkegowuk people who built up our communities and those who continue to help preserve our languages, culture and traditional knowledge.

We honour ancestors and the signatories of our Treaty by asserting our inherent rights and privileges within the Omushkego Aski.

By doing this, we can continue to shape the future of our territory.

Indigenous Peoples have been stewards of lands and waters in Canada since time immemorial.

History teaches us of our past. But it also provides the foundation of our future for generations to come.

Mushkegowuk Council is proud to celebrate National Indigenous History Month.
