RESOLUTION NO. 1987-39

SUBJECT: MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES LENIENCY POLICY

WHEREAS we are a sovereign Nation who never surrendered our land or our aboriginal rights, including our hunting, fishing and trapping rights and our role as custodians of the fish, birds and animals, and;

WHEREAS we never agreed to any limitation on these inherent rights, whether through our treaty of peace and friendship or any other means, and;

WHEREAS international law recognizes that the rights of aboriginal and people cannot be altered without their consent, and;

WHEREAS the Constitution Act, 1982 recognizes existing aboriginal and treaty rights, and;

WHEREAS the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources believes that it owns the land and its resources and only allows us to continue to harvest these resources through a 11leniency11 policy.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT this Assembly advises the Directors of the Mushkegowuk Council to meet with senior officials of the Ontario Government to assert our position and attempt to resolve this issue.
