RESOLUTION NO. 1987-55

SUBJECT: TRIBAL POLICE

WHEREAS we never surrendered our traditional lands and our aboriginal rights, including the right to manage and control our affairs in our own way, and;

WHEREAS the Omushkegowuk are dissatisfied with the present supervision and control of on-reserve policing by the Province of Ontario.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT this Assembly authorize the Board of Directors and staff of the Mushkegowuk Council to seek funds to conduct an investigation into problems with the present system and the feasibility of establishing a tribally controlled police force, including such issues as: salary differentials and allegations of discrimina­tion, training and suitability of police officer, allegations of misappropriation of funds, the number of police officers in each community and the total financial resources now allocated for policing within our jurisdiction, and other associated issues (e.g. Justice of the Peace Program), and;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT senior officials of the Governments of Canada and Ontario be informed of this decision.
