RESOLUTION NO. 1990-130

ATTAWAPISKAT RIGHTS TO TRADITIONAL PURSUITS

WHEREAS the Bird Sanctuary on the Agamaski Island prohibits local Band members of the Attawapiskat First Nation from practising their traditional pursuits such as hunting migratory birds;

AND WHEREAS when the Attawapiskat First Nation members were originally approached by officials wanting to establish the bird sanctuary on Agamaski Island, the First Nation members were assured that the guideĀ­lines of the proposed sanctuary would not affect their traditional pursuits;

AND WHEREAS there are members of the Attawapiskat First Nation who still recall and were present when the people were informed of the proposed Bird Sanctuary;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Attawapiskat First Nation seek the support of the Mushkegowuk Chiefs in requesting the government agency involved to hold a hearing to restore to the Attawapiskat First Nation people the right to continue to exercise their traditional pursuits such as hunting, fishing and trapping on the entire island of Agarnaski.
