RESOLUTION NO. 1993-14
Subject: Telecommunications
WHEREAS there is a need to overcome obstacles due to the geographic isolation of communities in the Mushkegowuk region;
AND WHEREAS a well designed, locally controlled, Telecommunications Package (based on computer, phone and cable technology) can play an important role and provide linkages, and networks, between our isolated communities;
AND WHEREAS such a telecommunications package could save lives of community members by enabling rapid identification of the location of community members experiencing emergencies in the bush;
AND WHEREAS such a telecommunications package could increase the effectiveness of policy development and programs in education, health, economic development, governance, traditions, language and culture;
AND WHEREAS such a telecommunications package could eventually enable community members to communicate in a cost effective manner with families and friends throughout the region;
AND WHEREAS funding is presently available through a new provincial program called the Ontario Network Implementation Program,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Assembly recognizes the important role that a Telecommunications Network could play in the Mushkegowuk Region;
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Mushkegowuk Council staff are hereby instructed to develop a

telecommunications package for the Mushkegowuk Region, in conjunction with affiliated organizations, based upon the following principles;
that the member communities will have ownership over the design and control over the implementation of the telecommunications network
that the telecommunications network will be designed in a manner which is supportive of Cree Traditions, Language and Culture
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Governments of Ontario and Canada are hereby requested to support this community based telecommunications initiative;

Nishnawbe Aski Nation is hereby requested to proactively support this initiative of the Mushkegowuk communities.
