RESOLUTION NO. 1994-03-03

Limitations Act Amendments

WHEREAS the First Nations in Mushkegowuk Territory and in Ontario have numerous outstanding claims against the provincial and federal governments and others, based on Aboriginal and Treaty rights; and

WHEREAS the provincial Limitations Act puts time limits on making legal claims, including some First Nation claims; and

WHEREAS the provincial government has introduced legislation to amend the provincial Limitations Act; and

WHEREAS the cutting off of valid First Nations claims would only continue the history of grave past injustices;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Mushkegowuk Council Assembly objects in the strongest possible terms to the present proposed amendments, which will unjustly cut off valid First Nations and Aboriginal claims;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Mushkegowuk Council Assembly urges and insists that the proposed amendments be revised by the province so they do not limit First Nation and Aboriginal Claims.
