SUBJECT: MUSHKEGOWUK EMERGENCY

HOUSING ISSUE

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk Council through previous assemblies has obtained authorization and support to address the emergency housing shortage that exists in the Mushkegowuk communities, and has gained the support of the Nishnawbe­Aski Chiefs meetings and the Chiefs of Ontario meetings on the issue;

WHEREAS the response of the Ontario government has fallen short, by implementing housing programs that address only the First Nation housing shortage in urban areas;

WHEREAS the federal government has continued to ignore the call to address the on-reserve housing crisis;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that his Assembly directs the Board of Chiefs and the executive to develop a Regional Housing Authority with a mandate for First Nations to work collectively in building homes according to standards acceptable to the Mushkegowuk First Nations and in a cost effective manner that will help in addressing the housing emergency that now exists;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that in addition, to address the immediate issue, the Board of Chiefs solicit the support of relief agencies to address the housing emergency situation that exists.
