RESOLUTION NO. 1994-10-11

SUBJECT: ONTARIO HYDRO POWER DISCONNECTIONS

WHEREAS it has been the practice of Ontario Hydro to shut off the power to the homes of First Nations people who cannot make ends meet to pay their hydro bills, and;

WHEREAS Ontario Hydro employees continue with this practice without consulting the Chief and Council in the communities to determine whether there exists a medical or other therapeutic need by the occupant or family member such as life support systems in their homes, or other electrical support systems, and;

WHEREAS this practice may be detrimental to the health and well being of the family members in question;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Council prevail upon Ontario Hydro to consult not only the families to determine whether there exists a medical or other therapeutic need for electrical power, but also consult with the Chiefs and Councils and clinical staff of each First Nation to remedy the situation prior to disconnecting power;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that discussions be held with Ontario Hydro to develop an acceptable payment play as an option to arbitrary power disconnections by Ontario Hydro.
