RESOLUTION NO. 1995-10-07

SUBJECT: FEDERAL AND PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT CUTBACKS

WHEREAS the federal government has announced numerous cutbacks to various programmes vital to Mushkegowuk Council First Nations;

WHEREAS the provincial government has announced cutbacks in various critical social programmes, and threatens more reductions in funding;

WHEREAS many of the cutbacks are motivated by an unrealistic and unnecessary desire to quickly abolish government deficits, and to provide tax reductions to privileged parts of the population;

WHEREAS these reductions are contrary to the special responsibility these governments have to First Nations, and only serve to worsen the situation of that part of the population which is already the greatest victim of poverty and lack of opportunity;

WHEREAS these reductions fail to recognize the special needs and the special costs of northern communities;

WHEREAS the Assembly of First Nations has urged that First Nations contact federal and provincial government representatives to protest these cutbacks;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the

Mushkegowuk Assembly express its protest and objection to the short-sighted, harsh and unjust federal and provincial government financial cutbacks to the Mushkegowuk Council First Nations;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the federal and provincial governments discontinue these financial cutbacks and restore just and necessary funding;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the staff of Mushkegowuk Council communicate these concerns to government representatives in accordance with the recommendations of the AFN Calgary conference.
