RESOLUTION NO. 1995-10-12

SUBJECT: DEVELOPMENT OF CREE

IMMERSION COURSE

WHEREAS there is a need to promote our Mushkegowuk Cree language;

WHEREAS we have now accepted the Missanabie Cree and the Chapleau Cree as members of the Mushkegowuk Council;

WHEREAS it is the desire of many of the individuals in both the new and previous Mushkegowuk member First Nations to learn the Cree language;

WHEREAS the loss of our language is very visible in some of our existing communities;

WHEREAS other First Nations within Canada have faced the same problem and dealt with the issue with great success;

WHEREAS a Cree immersion course of several weeks, held in a Mushkegowuk Council community, is a possible means of promoting the Cree language, and a possible economic development business venture;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the

Annual Assembly of Mushkegowuk Council direct Mushkegowuk Council staff to examine the possibility of a Cree immersion course held in one of the Mushkegowuk Council communities, for purposes of enhancing the use of the Cree language, for local economic development, and as a business venture by

Pasico or other Mushkegowuk area corporation;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a report on this matter be presented to the Chiefs by January 1996.
