RESOLUTION NO. 1997-08-18

SUBJECT: ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk First Nations are moving towards local control of education; and

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk First Nations have successfully negotiated for the provision and control of elementary and secondary education services to their members within their respective communities through the construction and operation of their own educational institutions; and

WHEREAS the discrepancy in funding provided by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) for services previously purchased from provincially operated schools and funding provided for First Nation operated schools is grossly unjust and therefore causing the First Nation financial hardships in their endeavours to exercise greater control and to provide adequate and essential services to their members.

TI-IEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Chiefs in Assembly hereby direct the Grand Chief and the appropriate staff to facilitate a lobbying process designed to negotiate with the

Federal Government, specifically INAC, a process to amend the education formula funding restrictions for First Nation operated schools thus enabling the First Nations to provide adequate essential elementary and secondary educational services to their members; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Council Grand Chief work in conjunction with Nishnawbe Aski Nation to lobby for the purpose of bringing about the necessary changes in current funding allocations to meet the needs of all First Nation communities.
