RESOLUTION NO. 1998-08-07
SUBJECT: FOREST FIRE PROTECTION INITIATIVES
WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk commurut1es have an interest in the protection of its forest industry;
WHEREAS it is necessary to train the necessary people in fire fighting to protect this resource;
WHEREAS the Ministry of Natural Resources has contracted outside fire crews to fight fires in the Mushkegowuk area, taking away potential employment opportunities for our trained crews;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Grand Chief be mandated to initiate a Mushkegowuk based training program to ensure the capability of fire protection and suppression crews to be developed prior to the next assembly;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Council direct the Ministry of Natural Resources to give first priority in hiring to Mushkegowuk fire fighting crews;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that discussions between Mushkegowuk Council and the Ministry of Natural Resources occur and that a protocol be established whereby our own fire fighting crews can be contracted to fight fires in
the Mushkegowuk area and areas within the Nishnawbe Aski Nation area where required;
AND BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that a report be presented at the next annual assembly regarding this initiative.
