RESOLUTION NO. 1998-08-16

SUBJECT: S H I N G W A U K UNIVERSITY

WHEREAS Algoma University College has expressed a sincere interest in the establishment of Shingwauk University as a distinctly Aboriginal educational institution; and

WHEREAS, following the release of the Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, Algoma University College has affirmed its commitment to expand its Aboriginal partnerships and to move resolutely towards establishing Shingwauk University; and

WHEREAS Algoma University has invited representation from a number of Aboriginal organizations including Mushkegowuk Council, toward the development of Shingwauk University; and

WHEREAS the need exists for the development of Aboriginal-specific post­secondary institutions that recognize the unique educational needs of Aboriginal students;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Chiefs in Assembly fully support Algoma University College with respect to the principle of the establishment of Shingwauk University.
