RESOLUTION NO. 1998-08-19

SUBJECT: TRADITIONAL AND SPIRITUAL ELDERS AND HEALERS

WHEREAS there is a need for healing opportunities for our people to heal past and current issues which affect their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being;

WHEREAS traditional spiritual healers, elders and medicine people have been in existence since time immemorial and, the wholistic approach taken by these traditional healers have benefitted and continue to benefit our people;

WHEREAS our people have the right to access services on a comparable and equitable basis such as that afforded contemporary medical models;

WHEREAS there are difficulties m accessing funding to cover the per diem costs for traditional healers;

WHEREAS the provision of these services has been done on an ad hoc and piecemeal basis;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Chiefs in Assembly fully recognize and support our Traditional and Spiritual Elders and Healers and hereby direct the Mushkegowuk Council to provide the

assistance and support for funding through Weeneebayko Health Ahtuskaywin, Aboriginal Healing and Wellness, and Aboriginal Healing Foundation and other funding agencies.
