RESOLUTION NO. 2000-08-13

SENSITIVITY IN THE .JUDICIAL AND CORRECTIONS SYSTEM

WHEREAS Mushkegowuk citizens have always valued the concepts of family and the dignity of individuals; and

WHEREAS, from time to time, Mushkegowuk citizens come into conflict with the non-native judicial and corrections system with the result that members are taken out of our conummities and placed in correctional institutions; and

WHEREAS the non-native judicial and corrections system is in many ways incompatible with our traditions and rights, and tends to discriminate against First Nations persons and have a disproportionate impact on us; and

WHEREAS Mushkegowuk citizens who are removed from our communities and incarcerated are sometimes allowed by the existing system to return home for short periods to attend family funerals or to support family members in crisis, but such visits are conducted in a way which unnecessarily degrades Mushkegowuk citizens, such as by cornpelling individuals to appear at funerals bound in shackles;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Assembly urges officials in the judicial and coITectional system to develop practices and protocols which respect our citizens and which avoid practices such as unnecessary public shackling.
