RESOLUTION NO. 2001-09-24

CHILD PROTECTION WORKER FOR FORT ALBANY

WHEREAS Fort Albany First Nation is experiencing an alarmingly high number of children being apprehended by Payukotayno: James and Hudson Bay Family Services; and

WHEREAS children are being removed from the community and placed in the south far from their homes and culture; and

WHEREAS the parents of these children do not appear to realize the very real possibility that they may lose their children permanently; and

WHEREAS Fort Albany First Nation believes that the presence of a child protection worker in the community could do much to decrease the apprehension rate by educating the parents on the impacts of child protection proceedings and working with them to be able to make the necessary lifestyle changes to ensure the return of their children;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Chiefs in Assembly supports Fort Albany First Nation to advocate to Payukotayno for a child protection worker position to be based permanently in Fort Albany.
