RESOLUTION NO. 2002-09-13

NORTH AMERICAN INDIGENOUS GAMES -TEAM ONTARIO

WHEREAS since the establishment of the North American Indigenous Games, Mushkegowuk Youth Athletes have participated as members of Team Ontario, and;

WHEREAS no less than forty-nine (49) Mushkegowuk Youth Athletes participated in the recent 2002 North American Indigenous Games held in the city of Winnipeg, and;

WHEREAS the interest, support and participation by Mushkegowuk Youth, Parents, Volunteers and their respective communities continues to increase as evidenced by the number of participants at the recent games in Winnipeg, and;

WHEREAS these activities acknowledge individual and team skills including opportunities for personal growth, reinforcing self esteem and individual worth, and;

WHEREAS the Province of Ontario has one of the largest Aboriginal populations in Canada, resulting in a limited opportunity for all Aboriginal Athletes across Ontario to be selected as members of Team Ontario, and;

WHEREAS if the Ontario Aboriginal Sports Circle would approve of Team Ontario establishing a Northern and Southern contingent, Aboriginal Youth Athletes would

have a greater opportunity to be selected in representing their traditional territory including a more equitable representation of the Province.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Chiefs and delegates in Assembly direct the Grand Chief to acquire the necessary political support from Nishnawbe Aski Nation to support the establishment of a Northern and Southern contingent of Aboriginal Youth Athletes by the Ontario Aboriginal Sports Circle to represent Team Ontario at the next North American Indigenous Games;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Grand Chief contact the office of the Ontario Aboriginal Sports Circle to establish a Northern contingent of Aboriginal Youth Athletes to represent Team Ontario at the next North American Indigenous Games.
