RESOLUTION NO. 2002-09-22

MISSANABIE CREE COMMUNITY LAND BASE AND COMMUNITY FUNDING

WHEREAS the people of the Missanabie Cree First Nation have lived in the Missanabie area since before Canada was established as a nation;

WHEREAS the Missanabie Cree First Nation occupied Missanabie territory at the time of the visit by the treaty commissioners in the year 1906;

WHEREAS the Missanabie Cree First Nation was never allocated land in accordance with the spirit and intent of Treaty Nine;

WHEREAS the people of Missanabie Cree First Nation have continued to live, hunt and practice traditional activities in the traditional territory now known as the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve;

WHEREAS many members of the Missanabie Cree First Nation have moved to other locations to find meaningful work and to access adequate health care, education services and comfortable housing;

WHEREAS the passing of six First Nation members within the past year has highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for our members to move back to our traditional lands;

WHEREAS the government of Canada has taken six years to complete a legal opinion pertaining to the non fulfilment of its treaty obligations;

WHEREAS the Missanabie Cree continue to wait for Canada to complete their legal opm10n;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Mushkegowuk Council support and assist the Missanabie Cree First Nation in demanding that the government of Ontario provide an interim land base for the Missanabie Cree in our traditional territory;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Mushkegowuk Council support and assist the Missanabie Cree First Nation in demanding that the government of Canada fulfill its fiduciary responsibility to provide adequate funding to allow the Missanabie Cree to establish a community for its members;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Grand Chief assist the Missanabie Cree First Nation by attending meetings with the Chief of the Missanabie Cree First Nation with the governments of Canada and Ontario to further these objectives of the Missanabie Cree.
