Resolution No. 2003-09-08

DEFENSE SITES

WHEREAS the Department of National Defense (ONO) has operated various military installations and radar sites on the traditional lands of Mushkegowuk First Nations;

WHEREAS many of those sites have been responsible for contamination of the environment by PCBs and other harmful substances;

WHEREAS those harmful substances have entered the food chain and many Mushkegowuk members have always been, and continue to be, dependant on wildlife for a substantial part of their diet;

WHEREAS those installations have been abandoned and many have not been adequately cleaned up, nor has the government made any effort to compensate Mushkegowuk First Nations for the use of the land and the environmental destruction caused by those installations;

WHEREAS Mushkegowuk Council Resolution 2000-08-07 called for the clean-up and remediation of the remaining sites.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Mushkegowuk First Nations call upon the Federal and Provincial governments to complete the clean up of the abandoned installations, and any contamination caused by them, in a manner satisfactory to those First Nations;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Mushkegowuk Council work with the First Nations to pressure the Federal government to provide adequate compensation to the Mushkegowuk First Nations for the impacts these installations have caused, and will continue to cause on future generations.
