Resolution No. 2003-09-13

RECEIVING HOMES IN MUSHKEGOWUK COMMUNITIES

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk Chiefs and delegates in Assembly on September 26, 2001 passed Resolution No. 2001-09-25 supporting Attawapiskat First Nation to advocate to Payukotayno for a receiving home to be established in Attawapiskat; and

WHEREAS Attawapiskat First Nation as well as the other Mushkegowuk communities continue to experience a high number of children being apprehended by Child and Family Services; and

WHEREAS children from all Mushkegowuk communities continue to be removed from their communities and continue to be placed in the south far. from their homes and culture; and

WHEREAS there is lack of placement resources such as foster homes in Mushkegowuk communities due to the housing shortages and overcrowding and where homes are available, it is difficult, if not next to impossible, to meet the foster care standards imposed by the province; and

WHEREAS Mushkegowuk communities need receiving homes in their communities to provide short term placements for children in care.
