Resolution No. 2003-09-21
HOSPITAL STAFF IN ATTAWAPISKAT
WHEREAS the James Bay General Hospital serves the Attawapiskat First Nation community; and
WHEREAS the Native status employees at the James Bay General Hospital Attawapiskat Wing must pay income tax; and
WHEREAS the Indian Act provides tax exemption for status Indians deriving their income on reserve;
WHEREAS as First Nations people we have always felt that the government, be it federal or provincial, should not have the right to impose upon our Treaty and Aboriginal Rights;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs in Assembly direct the Grand Chief and the Deputy Grand Chief to meet with the appropriate provincial government personnel to initiate dialogue to work towards resolution to the problem of taxation of Native employees at the Attawapiskat Wing of the James Bay General Hospital.
