Resolution No. 2005-03-10

Wildlife Co-Management

WHEREAS the individual Mushkegowuk First Nations and the Mushkegowuk Council regional government have since time immemorial governed the hunting, trapping, fishing and other harvesting in Mushkegowuk Territory; and

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk people continue to have the inherent right, and the duty to govern and manage harvesting activities and practices in Mushkegowuk Territory; and

WHEREAS it is the intent of Mushkegowuk First Nations to regain and maintain control of wildlife management;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Mushkegowuk Council work toward negotiating an agreement with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to train First Nation Conservation Officers and other necessary wildlife management personnel; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Mushkegowuk Council work toward developing a joint wildlife management program with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources as a step towards re-asserting First Nation control over the management of natural resources in our region.
