Resolution No. 2005-03-11

Harvesting and Conservation in Mushkegowuk Territory

WHEREAS by resolution 2002-09-18, the Mushkegowuk Assembly reaffirmed the importance of the management and governance by the Mushkegowuk people of harvesting and hunting in Mushkegowuk Territory, and set out a procedure whereby the Mushkegowuk Council of Chiefs could investigate and take action on instances of hunting that appear to contravene our traditional principles of conservation and respect for wildlife; and

WHEREAS there have been reports of apparent significant over hunting of moose by one or several individuals in the Moose Cree First Nation territory; and

WHEREAS over hunting and a failure to follow the traditional respect for our Mushkegowuk Territory lands and animals can be a result of our failure to teach our communities the importance of these values and practices;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of Chiefs be authorized and directed to investigate the reported case of moose over hunting and take appropriate action in

accordance with Resolution 2002-09-18; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Assembly recognizes the continuing need to educate ourselves and our communities about respect for our land and the life that is on it, including by reducing the effect of our own litter and garbage on the land, and ensuring that Mushkegowuk wildlife does not become the object of sale for purely commercial purposes, but only for support of our traditional sustenance ways of living.
