Resolution No. 2005-09-12

Omushkego Cree Education

WHEREAS the Chiefs in Assembly have acknowledged that the Omushkego Cree Language shall be the official language of communication in the day to day business and operation of the Mushkegowuk First Nation communities and their affiliated Boards; and

WHEREAS each First Nation has established its own Education Department or Education Authority for the purpose of local control of education within our First Nation communities; and

WHEREAS history has proven that the "education process" is the key to protecting, preserving and maintaining the Creator's gift of our Mother Tongue, which is the Omushkego Cree Language by which we identify ourselves as Omushkego people; and

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk First Nations have recently commemorated 100 Years since the signing of the James Bay Treaty and acknowledge that recovering and restoring Omushkego Cree Education is one of the many necessary steps in the process of Nation Building and self­determination.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs in Assembly re-assert the right to exercise jurisdiction over local education and entrust the responsibility of building and restoring Omushkego Cree Education

based upon the foundation of the Omushkego Cree Language to our Education Departments and Education Authorities throughout the current local education system; and

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that these Education Departments and Education Authorities adhere to the Curriculum Guidelines, teaching materials and resources as developed, approved and certified through Omushkego Education; and

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that these Education Departments and Education Authorities make the necessary Policy changes and contractual arrangements to provide full recognition to the graduates of the Cree Language Teacher Certification Program as developed, approved and certified through Omushkego Education.
