Resolution No. 2005-09-14

Fire Protection and Emergency Services

WHEREAS INAC has provided funding for the construction of housing and capital facilities in Mushkegowuk communities but has not adequately provided the necessary resources both financial and technical to support the establishment and ongoing operations of proper fire protection services in the Mushkegowuk communities; and

WHEREAS INAC is the responsible authority for providing adequate resources to protect the health and safety of the Mushkegowuk First Nation communities and their members but has only provided minimal funding to cover the costs of critical community fire protection service; and

WHEREAS INAC has not adequately addressed or provided these services to the Mushkegowuk First Nations and has consequently put the health and safety and lives of the Mushkegowuk members at risk.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs in Assembly hereby demand that Indian and Northern Affairs Canada provide the necessary funding to cover costs associated with the development and establishment of proper fire protection services in the communities including support of a full time fire protection officer and/or a Fire Chief position; and to provide necessary personal protection and fire protection equipment; appropriate training and necessary capital facilities.

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that the Assembly mandates the Council of Chiefs to aggressively lobby for the provision of adequate annual funding levels to support the operation and maintenance of a fully functional fire protection program to ensure that the health and lives of Mushkegowuk community members are not lost or put unnecessarily at risk.
