Use of Local Labour in Construction of Transmission Line
WHEREAS the Chiefs in Assembly have been advised of a contract between DeBeers Canada Inc. and Valard Construction for the construction of a transmission line from Otter Rapids to Kashechewan; and
WHEREAS it is understood that Valard Construction have indicated they plan to use mechanical equipment for brush and timber removal; and
WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk First Nations prefer that local human resources be utilized as manual labour to support the local economy and to assist in addressing the high unemployment rate in the isolated communities.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs in Assembly support the affected First Nations' request to DeBeers Canada Inc. and Valard Construction that they amend the contract to include the utilization of human resources for the brush and timber removal component of the project.
