Resolution No. 2006-09-06

Customary Care Policy -Payukotayno James and Hudson Bay Family Services

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk Chiefs have approved Payukotayno James and Hudson Bay Family Services as the Child Welfare Authority for the Mushkegowuk Region; and

WHEREAS the Chiefs in Assembly provided direction through Assembly Resolution 2005-09-20 for Payukotayno James and Hudson Bay Family Services to initiate the traditional practices of Customary Care for care of children in the Mushkegowuk region;

WHEREAS it is understood that Customary Care is recognized under Section 10 of the Child and Family Services Act;

WHEREAS Payukotayno James and Hudson Bay Family Services through community consultations have completed the process of developing a Customary Care Policy for review and acceptance by the Chiefs in Assembly.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Chiefs in Assembly approve and fully support the direction of Payukotayno James and Hudson Bay Family Services in the introduction and application of Payukotayno's Customary Care Policy.

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that Payukotayno James and Hudson Bay Family Services consult with the individual First Nations to further customize care to accommodate individual First Nation community customs and practices relating to the care of children.
