Resolution No. 2006-09-17

Medical Coverage for Children in Care

WHEREAS it is the position of the Mushkegowuk Chiefs in Assembly that each of its First Nation community members be given equal rights to medical coverage and access to services;

WHEREAS in recent months, First Nation Inuit Health Branch has developed a policy position to disallow coverage for transportation costs associated to accessing medical services in Timmins, Kingston and other care centres for children currently under the care of the Regional Child and Family Service Agency-Payukotayno;

WHEREAS this is viewed as a discriminatory practice and violates the Treaty and health rights of these children to access comparable service otherwise available to every other member in the Mushkegowuk region.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Assembly direct the Grand Chief to intervene in this policy decision by First Nation Inuit Health Branch to ensure accessibility of this service to children being provided care through Payukotayno James and Hudson Bay Family Services.
