Resolution No. 2006-09-24

Further Study of Possible PCB Health Effects

WHEREAS the Federal Government (Health and Welfare Canada) conducted a study of our people, testing for the potential effects of PCBs and posted this study on their web site; and

WHEREAS the study identified that follow up work was required to further study the Health effects of our people; and

WHEREAS due to climatic change, cormorants from the Great Lakes are now migrating to James Bay, and cormorants are now part of our food resource and are known to be contaminated; and

WHEREAS the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement is being reviewed by both the Government of Canada and the United States.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs in Assembly request the Government of Canada, Health and Welfare Canada, Environment Canada and the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources to conduct further studies as suggested from the findings of the previous Health and Welfare study, including specifically the role of possibly contaminated cormorants.
