Support for Second Annual Justice Conference

WHEREAS the first Annual Justice Conference was held in Moose Factory on January 24-26, 2006 with a corresponding report provided to the 21st Annual Assembly in Fort Albany on September 19-22, 2006; and

WHEREAS key issues and concerns identified in this report clearly indicate the need for the member First Nations to further discuss issues within the current justice system impacting our communities; and

WHEREAS the report confirms that though the challenges are numerous, there is a willingness to work toward a collaborative approach in the administration of justice that is consistent with the language, culture and traditional practices of the Omushkegowuk people; and

WHEREAS necessary discussions and consultations to define this collaborative approach that will address our language, culture and traditional practices will require the participation of member First Nations to be facilitated through a similar conference.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Assembly mandates the Grand Chief and the executive to identify funding for the planning and implementation of a Second Annual Justice Conference for the purpose of developing a collaborative approach consistent with the language, culture and traditional practices of the Omushkegowuk people in the administration of justice within the communities of Mushkegowuk territory.
