Resolution No. 2006-09-33

Development of a Mushkegowuk/Ontario Round Table

WHEREAS the traditional lands of the Mushkegowuk First Nations comprise a significant portion of the Province of Ontario; and

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk territories are rich in natural resources and the Mushkegowuk people have a direct interest in managing and benefiting from future use of those resources; and

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk First Nations face unique issues that are distinct from other parts of the province and which will affect the future of those territories and resources including the mid­Canada line radar sites, hydro electric development, mining, land use planning and water fowl management; and

WHEREAS the Province of Ontario has in the past made unique commitments to co­planning processes, co-governance, resource revenue sharing and the development of Northern Rivers to the First Nations of Mushkegowuk Council; and

WHEREAS the James Bay Basin and watershed is a globally unique and significant area for the rivers, wetlands and abundant wildlife it contains.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Assembly of the Mushkegowuk Council directs the Grand Chief to pursue discussions with the Province of Ontario to develop a Mushkegowuk/Ontario Round Table to provide a forum for discussing issues relating to the lands and resources of the Mushkegowuk territories;

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that this table be implemented as soon as possible after an agreement has been reached with the Province and endorsed by the Mushkegowuk Council of Chiefs.
