Resolution No. 2007-09-20

Housing Strategy

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk First Nations face a housing crisis that continues to plague all our member First Nations with no immediate resources available to help deal with this region-wide crisis; and

WHEREAS the support on this issue from the Government of Canada has been severely lacking through the development of strategies based upon or within the framework of existing governmental policies that try to encompass all First Nations under one strategy when in fact the housing needs of every First Nation are truly unique; and

WHEREAS the existing funding provided by the Government of Canada provides only a fraction of what is needed to address the existing housing needs of our member First Nations and as a result the housing crisis continues to escalate; and

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk First Nations have in the past tried to develop different strategies to deal with this continually growing crisis attributed to growing housing backlogs; severely overcrowded housing units; houses with increasing mould issues; lack of affordable housing; and houses in extreme need of major renovations -resulting in recapitalization of existing housing dollars on older units; as well as the lack of supporting infrastructure to allow for more housing development;

Resolution No. 2007-09-20, Page 2

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that Mushkegowuk Council develop this strategy in conjunction with First Nation leaders and technicians so that a strategy is developed through full consultation and with the full support of the Mushkegowuk communities; and

FINALLY BE IT RESOLVED that the office of the Grand Chief continues to lobby the Government of Canada for additional funds to support this regional approach and strategy to deal with the housing crisis.
