Resolution No. 2007-09-31

Sexual Abuse of Women

WHEREAS the adult women and young women of Mushkegowuk people are entitled to full rights as persons in our Nation; and

WHEREAS there continues to be cases of sexual abuse of adult women and young women in our communities; and

WHEREAS sexual abuse of adult women and young women causes enormous and lasting physical and psychological pain and degradation to the victims, and causes continuing damage to them, to their children and grandchildren, to their parents and husbands and brothers and sisters, and to our communities; and

WHEREAS sexual abuse is often hidden, and the victims are afraid to speak up and defend themselves, and therefore this harm to our communities does not get the concern and attention that justice demands;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Women's Representative be empowered and requested to collect information and stories about sexual abuse in Mushkegowuk territories, while protecting victims' privacy, for purposes of raising awareness and for future purposes of formulating and implementing policies to reduce this problem in our communities.
