Resolution No. 2008-11-06

Apprenticeship Program

WHEREAS there is a shortage of certified tradespersons in the country; and

WHEREAS most baby boomers are reaching retirement age; and

WHEREAS the First Nation communities have always experienced shortage of tradespersons; and

WHEREAS First Nation communities have the fastest growing population nationally; and

WHEREAS First Nation communities will continue to experience increasing growth in infrastructure, correspondingly increasing the demand for tradespersons;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs and delegates in assembly, support the establishment of an apprenticeship committee that will find ways and means to increase the participation of First Nation members in the apprenticeship trades; and

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that the said committee lobby with the appropriate Provincial Ministry to fund the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) in First Nation High Schools which is currently only funded in provincially funded schools in Ontario.
