Political Territorial Organization (PTO) Recognition for Mushkegowuk Council

WHEREAS the Omushkego lnninu have been electing a Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief to lead Mushkegowuk Council for many years, and

WHEREAS the Office of the Grand Chief has provided an active voice for Omushkego concerns in both political and territorial issues, and

WHEREAS the Chiefs of Ontario in Assembly created the Political Confederacy to discuss regional matters and the implementation of resolutions of the Chiefs, as well as to guide the Ontario Regional Chief in the carrying out of his responsibilities, and

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk Grand Chief is a full and active member of the Political Confederacy with full voting powers, and

WHEREAS the Canadian and Ontario governments do not recognize Mushkegowuk Council as a Political Territorial Organization (PTO) and as a result channel support and funding agreements to the Nishnawbe Aski Nation for disbursement to Mushkegowuk Council and its member First Nations;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Mamohitowin of the Omushkegowuk affirms the role of

Mushkegowuk Council as a Political Territorial Organization (PTO) under the leadership of the Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief in cooperation with the Council of Chiefs.

FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that this Mamohitowin of the Omushkegowuk fully supports and endorses the role of the Mushkegowuk Grand Chief in the Political Confederacy as the rightful representative of the Mushkegowuk First Nations in order to ensure that the voices of the Omushkegowuk are heard when issues and concerns of Provincial or National importance are discussed, and

FlNALLY BE IT RESOLVED that this Mamohitowin of the Omushkegowuk calls for the cooperation of the various Federal and Provincial Ministries in recognizing Mushkegowuk Council as a Political Territorial Organization (PTO) and negotiating all agreements, including political and funding agreements, directly with Mushkegowuk Council for the full benefit of its member First Nations.
