Resolution No. 2010-09-28

Kashechewan Fire Hall

WHEREAS the community of Kashechewan has in the past experienced tragic deaths in their First Nation due to inadequate policing facilities and inadequate fire fighting facilities, including the lack of a fire hall; and

WHEREAS the inquest held into fire deaths in Kashechewan recommended major improvements in fire services in Kashechewan; and

WHEREAS the inadequate fire fighting conditions experienced in Kashechewan would not be tolerated in non-native communities in Ontario; and

WHEREAS Kashechewan's plan for a new fire hall in its community had been approved in principle by INAC, but that approval in principle has now been rescinded by INAC because of supposed reprioritization; and

WHEREAS the failure by INAC to provide basic fire hall service to the community of Kashechewan is just one more example of the long history of INAC failing to provide adequate basic services to First Nations people and the people of Kashechewan;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mamohitowin of the Omushkego express deep concern at the continued failure of INAC to provide funding for basic fire hall facilities in Kashechewan and strongly urge that such resources be provided without delay.
