Resolution No. 2011-09-10

Omushkegowuk Aski Environmental Contamination and Human Health Study

WHEREAS the abandoned Mid­Canada Line Radar Stations in the Mushkegowuk Region are significant sources of contamination; and

WHEREAS there are widespread concerns among members of the Mushkegowuk First Nations that their health and well being may be seriously affected by environmental contamination such as methyl-mercury, PCBs and select heavy metals; and

WHEREAS the Mushkegowuk Environmental Research Centre (MERC) has confirmed contamination of country foods resulting from the abandoned stations; and

WHEREAS Mushkegowuk First Nations are interested in knowing what environmental contaminants are affecting the health and well-being of members and communities; and

WHEREAS Mushkegowuk First Nations support the Mushkegowuk Environmental Research Centre on being the financial recipient for an Omushkegowuk Aski Environmental

Contamination and Human Health Study;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the First Nations of Mushkegowuk Council support submission of a MERC proposal to the National First Nation Environmental Contamination Program for the Omushkegowuk A ski Environmental Contamination and Human Health Study;
