Resolution No. 2011-09-12

Regional Land Use Planning Team

WHEREAS the Omushkego are united through kinship, language, culture, history, common harvesting areas, economic interests and traditional governance practises; and

WHEREAS the Omushkegowuk rights to the lands and resources have existed since time immemorial and belong to us and to our children into the future without end; and

WHEREAS the Omushkegowuk have the inherent right of self-determination and as such are re-asserting this right to govern and manage the natural resources located within the Mushkegowuk Territory; and

WHEREAS the Omushkegowuk have entered into a land use planning process with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources that will result in a Regional Lands and Resource Management Plan for the entire Mushkegowuk Territory; and

WHEREAS the Planning area encompasses the entire Mushkegowuk homelands including the lands and waters of the Far North, Southern Mushkegowuk and portions of Hudson

and western James Bays and offshore islands; and

WHEREAS Community Land Use Planning Coordinators have been hired in each of the Mushkegowuk First Nations to manage the collection and mapping of Omushkegowuk knowledge and other natural resource information that will be used to create an integrated Regional Lands and Resource Management Plan;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin endorses the appointment of the Community Land Use Planning Coordinators to the Regional Land Use Planning Team, subject to First Nation confirmation;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mushkegowuk Regional Elder and the Mushkegowuk Regional Land Use Planner be appointed to the Regional Land Use Planning Team;

FINALLY, BE IT RESOLVED that the Regional Land Use Planning Team prepare a Terms of Reference for land use planning to be ratified at a later Mamowihitowin of the Mushkegowuk First Nations or Council of Chiefs meeting.
