Resolution No. 2011-09-18

Amendments to the Mushkegowuk Election Code

WHEREAS the Election Code of the Mushkegowuk Council requires updating to include election procedures for the Regional Elder, and a Mushkegowuk Youth Chief, and procedures for mail-in ballot;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the proposed Election Code amendments contained in the Mamowihitowin delegates' materials be adopted, with the following amendments:

The term "Youth Grand Chief' as used in the draft will be changed to "Mushkegowuk Youth Chief'. The word "Grand Chief' should be reserved for the senior leaders;

Because the role of the Youth Chief is different from the Grand Chief, the definition in the draft Code will be modified to read as follows:

"Mushkegowuk Youth Chief' is a person who has been elected to the office of the Mushkegowuk Youth Chief pursuant to this Code and who, in their elected capacity, is the spokesperson of the Mushkegowuk Youth. The Mushkegowuk Youth Chief is a member of the

Mushkegowuk Council Executive Committee.

The position of Regional Elder will be included in the Election Code with the same election procedures as the Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief;

The name of the position of Regional Elder will be changed to "Mushkegowuk Senior Elder'' to make it clear that the Elder speaks on behalf of the Mushkegowuk people.

The position of Mushkegowuk Senior Elder will be described as:

"Mushkegowuk Senior Elder" is a person who has been elected to the office of the Mushkegowuk Senior Elder pursuant to this Code and who, in their elected capacity, is a senior advisor to the Council of Chiefs and the Mushkegowuk Mamowihitowin, to offer the voice of Mushkegowuk wisdom and experience and tradition.

New mail-in procedures for voting are necessary for the Election Code. The mail-in voting procedures of the Moose Cree First Nation will be adopted for the Mushkegowuk Election Code, with necessary changes.
