Resolution No. 2011-09-32

Minopimatisiwin Traditional Healing Program

WHEREAS the Traditional Healing Services Program administered under the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority has been in existence since 2009, directed by First Nation resolutions and under pressure from the Indian Residential School survivors for cultural healing support; and

WHEREAS Weeneebayko Area Health Authority continues to support this traditional / cultural based program which has been part of the contribution agreement with Health Canada in addressing grief and healing, community in crisis response suicide awareness and sexual abuse community awareness and continued support for the Indian Residential School survivors; and

WHEREAS Health Canada with the Federal Government has a -responsibility for the well-being of the Omushkego and on-going cultural support is essential; and

WHEREAS since the re-introduction of the traditional healing program there has been a considerable increase in the usage by our members as indicated by community clinic statistics under the

Weeneebayko Area Health Authority; and

WHEREAS there has been an indication from Health Canada that the traditional healing program is to be discontinued March 31, 2012; which will be detrimental to the benefits of the traditional healing program to our Omushkegowuk communities;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority consider making the traditional healing program an integrated program with case management and full participation and support from physicians, traditional healers, elders, advisory and mental health services for the holistic benefit of our people's body, mind, heart and spirit; and that those traditional healing services be extended to Taykwa Tagamou Nation;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority should work with Mushkegowuk Council to develop a regional strategy with the Mushkegowuk communities to promote, sustain and implement their own traditional healing programs in their communities;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk directs the Office of the Grand Chief to pressure Health Canada to continue funding for the Traditional Healing Program.
