Concerns About Goose Populations in Mushkegowuk Territory

WHEREAS the animals and birds and plants of our traditional Mushkegowuk homelands are a critical part of our daily lives and our existence as Omushkego; and

WHEREAS the geese of Mushkegowuk territory are a fundamental part of our history, our culture, our food supply, our way of living arid our future; and

WHEREAS the migration and population of the goose population of Mushkegowuk territory has become increasingly at risk and unpredictable;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the Omushkego express our continued respect and concern for the geese of our territory, which give us our material and spiritual and cultural lives; and

BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the Omushkego initiate a review of the apparent decline and irregularity of the goose population and migration in Mushkegowuk territory, and of possible solutions such as moratoriums, sanctuaries, closed season, and other possibilities, and to canvas possible solutions from our people and from other bodies that may have options to consider.
