Resolution No. 2012-09-23

Review of Contract for Native Support Services at Monteith Correctional Complex

WHEREAS many of the inmates at the Monteith Correctional Complex are First Nation members, and some are from Mushkegowuk territories; and

WHEREAS native support services are provided to First Nation inmates by contract with a friendship centre; and

WHEREAS concerns have been raised that some staff hired under the contract are not First Nation, do not speak First Nation languages, and are not familiar with traditional and spiritual teachings; and

WHEREAS the present native support services for Aboriginal persons at Monteith usually come to an end when those persons leave the institution, resulting in a complete loss of support, and great hardship, for those individuals, at a time when continued support is very important;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Mushkegowuk Council staff be directed to make inquiries and conduct a review of the contract and make recommendations for native support services at Monteith Correctional

Complex regarding concerns that some staff are not qualified to provide appropriate First Nation services; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this review include consideration of possible ways to continue support when individuals leave the institution.
