Non-Insured Health Benefits Program Support for Land Based Indigenous Healing Practices

WHEREAS the Opioid crisis and illegal drugs and alcohol epidemic continues to destroy our families, communities and our Cree way of life; and

WHEREAS Mushkegowuk's Special Task Force for Healthier Communities has been directed to explore an·d provide treatment options for addictions, preferably options that are culturally relevant and sensitive to the unique needs of the Omushkegowuk; and

WHEREAS current Non-insured Health Benefits Program policies prioritize western paradigms for treatment and detox services, and the Indigenous healing services are limited thereby creating barriers for culturally appropriate• healing services· for the Indigenous communities; and

WHEREAS the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's call to action 22 states: "We call upon those who can effect change within the Canadian health-care system to recognize the value of Aboriginal healing practices and use them in the treatment of Aboriginal patients in collaboration with Aboriginal healers and Elders where requested by Aboriginal patients."

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that in response to our current State of Emergency, this Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk mandates the Mushkegowuk Council to obtain changes to current Non-Insured Health Benefits Program policies so that our Land-based Indigenous Healing Practices are afforded recognition, acceptance and full support.
