Exploration of Establishing a Social Department

WHEREAS As a result of the Opioid Crisis Declaration and through the work of The Task Force for Healthier Communities, the need for more social supports and services have been identified;

WHEREAS the communities of Mushkegowuk acknowledge the opioid crisis for the public health crisis it has become and acknowledge the compounded social impacts within our communities;

WHEREAS Those that suffer from opiate addictions are vulnerable and have increased risks for becoming homeless, involved in the Child Welfare System, becoming incarcerated, and typically have a multitude of mental health issued that results in poorer health outcomes;

WHEREAS The Opioid Crisis has promoted the need to re-examine the provisions of services in Child Welfare, Housing, Education, Health, Education & Training under Mushkegowuk Council;

WHEREAS members who are affected by poverty, low education levels, addictions, justice system etc., must be granted socio-economic opportunities to improve their quality of life;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk directs the Mushkegowuk Council Executive to explore the possibility of establishing a social department, including identifying options an definitions of the purpose of a social development.

FINALLY BE IT RESOLVED that the Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk direct the Executive Council to report back to the Council of Chiefs within six months for review and approval of any recommendations to proceed with the development of a social department.
