Support for Kashechewan's Call for a Full Criminal Investigation

WHEREAS The illegal drug trade continues to destroy our Cree way of life, our communities and cause numerous premature deaths among our young population without any care or concern from the drug dealers; and

WHEREAS Several police illegal drug investigations were completed, filed in court and for various reasons withdrawn by the court system and the criminal is free to go; and

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the

Omushkegowuk calls on the Ministry of the Solicitor General to complete a thorough investigation into the death of Kashechewan First Nation community member Rudy Friday who committed suicide in August 2019 and before his premature death, he informed other community members of who the supplier of the illegal drugs he was taking; and the Kashechewan First Nation calls on the investigating authorities to pursue criminal charges; and

RESOLVED that this Mamowihitowin of the Omushkegowuk calls on the Ministry of the Solicitor General to conduct thorough investigations into all deaths where illegal drugs is determined to be a contributing factor; including pursuing criminal charges to the supplier of the illegal drugs; and to provide their findings to the affected family in a timely manner.
