Human Rights Complaint re Health Services Inequality in Mushkegowuk Territory

WHEREAS the people and communities of Mushkegowuk Territory have for many decades suffered inadequate and third-rate health care serves, as compared to non­Indigenous individuals and communities in Ontario and Canada; and

WHEREAS the third-rate health care services in Mushkegowuk First Nations impose immense costs on the Omushkego people in terms of unnecessary illnesses, inadequately treated health problems, physical and personal and family suffering, and impediments to educational, economic and spiritual development; and

WHEREAS the First Nations of Mushkegowuk Council have for decades been pleading and advocating and fighting for adequate and equal health services, without real success,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Chiefs and delegates of this 36th Annual Mamowihitowin authorize and direct that Mushkegowuk Council begin preparation for a human rights complaint (in both federal and provincial jurisdictions) based on the longstanding and serious deficiencies and unequal treatment in health services received by Mushkegowuk First Nations and the members of the

Mushkegowuk communities in their traditional homeland Mushkegowuk Territory, treatment and services that would be considered unacceptable in non­Indigenous Ontarian and Canadian communities, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Mushkegowuk Council begin the processes of retaining legal counsel for the health inequality human rights complaints, and arranging funding for legal costs, and arranging with legal counsel for the provision of analysis and legal advice and process steps in order to commence the human rights complaints.
